It is a condition that causes weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the face temporarily. It happens when the nerve controlling muscles becomes swollen or compressed.

May include:

• Muscle weakness 
• Numbness 
• Compression 
• Difficult smiling 
• Stiffness 
• Difficult eye closure 
• Drooling 
• Headache 
• Dryness in eye or mouth

May include:

• Herpes simplex
• HIV 
• Sarcoidosis 
• Epstein-Barr virus

Nonsurgical option: 

Corticosteroids: these are anti-inflammatory agents. If they can reduce the swelling of the nerve, it will be fine within few days. 

Antiviral drugs: Antivirals added to steroids are possibly beneficial and helpful.

Surgical option:

Decompression: This surgery may be performed to release the pressure of the facial nerve by opening this. 

Plastic surgery: Sometimes it requires plastic surgery to properly correct this facial nerves. Sometimes therapies can help enough.

It may cause the following:

• Permanent damage to your facial nerve.
• Regrowth of nerve fibers abnormally. 
• Blindness
