Also called Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, is a kind of weight-loss surgery in which a small pouch is created from the stomach and is connected directly to the small intestine. After gastric bypass, swallowed food goes into this small pouch and then directly into the small intestine, thereby bypassing most of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine.

During the procedure, some incisions are made on the stomach to seal it off from the rest of your stomach. Then, the surgeon cuts the small intestine and sews part of it directly onto the pouch. In this way food bypasses most of your stomach and the first section of your small intestine, and instead enters directly into the middle part of your small intestine.
