Details of ASD Closure - Adult

It is a hole in the wall which separates two chambers of the heart. This is a congenital defect a child is born with. This happens when the wall does not form properly.

May include: 

• Breathlessness 
• Fatigue 
• Leg swelling 
• Stroke 
• Heart murmur

• Genetic disorder.
• Mother's poor nutrition.
• Use of alcohol.
• Diabetes Rubella

May be recommended:

• Echocardiogram. 
• Chest X-ray. 
• Electrocardiogram (ECG). 
• Cardiac catheterization. 
• Imaging tests like MRI, CT scan

Surgical treatment has two types to be performed. 

Cardiac catheterization: During this procedure, the surgeon places with the help of catheter a mesh patch to close the hole and now the heart tissue grows around the mesh, permanently sealing the hole. This is special for the secundum type of atrial septal defects.

Open-heart surgery: During this procedure, an incision is made in the chest where surgeon uses patches to close the hole. This is special to repair primum, sinus venosus and coronary sinus atrial defects.

• Increased risk of a stroke.
• Heart rhythm abnormalities.
• Shortened life span.
• Right-sided heart failure.
