Details of Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure in which the very tip of the tooth’s root is removed and sealed. It is usually performed by an endodontist, a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of tooth pain from root canal disease.

May include:

• Swelling over face, neck or head
• Bone loss around the root
• Bleeding in teeth
• Pain mouth area

May be recommended:

• Radiographs (x-rays)
• CBCT scans (cone beam-computed tomography)

In this procedure, a small incision is made through the gum tissues at the level of the diseased root, allowing direct access to the infected peri-apical tissues, which allows removal of infected tissue around the root. And to stop further infection a small filling is done for sealing. Few stitches are also made to assure that the gum tissues are closed and will heal properly.
