It is an assisted reproductive technology which is used along with the IVF In vitro fertilization. It is generally used in the embryo implantation and is more likely to be recommended when there has been multiple IVF failures.

During this, Unlike IVF the embryo is transferred and has to implant into endometrium and “stick” for pregnancy to occur. It has different methods:

Mechanical hatching: In which the embryologist keeps the embryo steady with the help of a pipette, while using a micro-needle to puncture through the zona pellucida, go just underneath the shell for a bit, and then come out the other end.

Mechanical expansion of the shell: In which the hydrostatic pressure is introduced just under the shell, to cause it to expand.

Chemical hatching: In which a chemical known as Tyrode’s acid. Tiny amounts of acid are applied to the zona pellucida until the shell is breached.

Drilling: In which vibratory movements are used to create a conical opening.

May include:
