VP shunting, also known as ventriculoperitoneal shunting, is a procedure to get rid of excess fluid from the brain, a medical condition termed hydrocephalus. The extra fluid is drained out, helping restore ideal pressure in the brain.

During the surgery, the surgeon makes a small hole in the skull and inserts the ventriculoperitoneal shunt, which typically consists of a valve and tubes.
