Details of Pharyngectomy

Pharyngectomy is the surgical method to remove the pharynx, a cone-shaped cavity that connects the muscular tube called esophagus to the nose and mouth.

Tumour in throat/neck

Physical examination
Blood tests
Imaging tests: X-ray, CT scan, MRI
Laryngoscopy: Examines the larynx and the upper portion of the airway
Throat culture: Detects presence of bacterial or fungal infection in the throat
Biopsy

During the procedure, the surgeon makes a large incision in front of the neck and either removes a part or the entire pharynx, detaching it from the larynx (voice box). In some cases, the larynx is also removed.
