Details of Developmental Dislocation-DDH

Developmental Dislocation (DDH) of the hip, or Developmental Dysplasia, or Hip Dysplasia is a condition in which a hip socket does not fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone. Because of this, the hip joint becomes partially or completely dislocated. Most patients are born with the condition.

In teenagers and young adult, painful conditions such as osteoarthritis or a hip labral tear. Also activity-related groin pain, or in some cases even a sensation of instability in the hip.

The usual cause leading to a shallower socket is lack of space in the womb, which may be due to:

• First pregnancy
• Large baby
• Breech presentation

Milder cases might become apparent only in teenage or young adulthood. In such cases, surgery may be needed to shift the bones into proper position for smooth joint function.

Later in life, it can damage sort cartilage rimming the socket, called a hip labral tear.

It can also make osteoarthritis more likely.
