Details of Ovarian Cancer Surgery

This is a type of cancer which starts in ovaries. Ovaries produce eggs and hormones in females.

Types of ovarian cancer:

Epithelial tumors: It is when the cancer starts in the thin layer of tissue that covers the outside of the ovaries. Stromal tumors: Which starts in the ovarian tissue that contains hormone-producing cells.

Germ cell tumors: Which starts in the egg-producing cells.

Treatment options:

Surgery for advanced cancer: This is for advanced staged where doctor recommend chemotherapy after surgically removing cancer.

Surgery to remove both ovaries: This is done when the cancer is in both ovaries without any signs of additional cancer. In this procedure, uterus will be left intact.

Surgery to remove both ovaries and the uterus: This is done by surgically removing the ovaries, the fallopian tubes, the uterus, nearby lymph nodes and a fold of fatty abdominal tissue.

Surgery to remove one ovary: This is done in early stage. In which the affected ovary is removed leaving the rest intact.
