Details of Oophorectomy

This is a surgical procedure to eliminate one or both ovaries. Ovaries are organs like almonds put on each side of the uterus in your pelvis.

To do this:

• Ovarian cancer
• Endometriosis
• Ovarian abscess
• Ovarian tumors or cysts

Two ways to perform:

Laparotomy: During the procedure, a large incision is made in lower abdomen to get access the ovary where surgeon separates each ovary from the blood supply and tissue that is around it and removes the ovary.

Minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery: During the procedure, multiple incisions are made in abdomen and a tiny camera through an incision and surgical tools are inserted and now the same procedure is performed.
