Details of Multiple Subpial Transections - MST

If brain seizures begin in a vital area of the brain, e.g., in such areas that control movement, feeling, language, or memory, and epilepsy called multiple subpial transection (MST) may be an option.

During the procedure, an area of the brain is exposed after an incision in the scalp. A piece of bone is removed and a section of the dura pulled back , that is a tough membrane that covers the brain. Now using a surgical microscope to produce a magnified view of the brain, the surgeon makes a series of parallel, shallow cuts (transections) in gray matter, just below the pia mater (subpial), the delicate membrane that surrounds the brain (it lies beneath the dura). And now the scalp is stitched.
