Details of Mastoidectomy

This is surgical procedure to remove diseased mastoid air cells. The mastoid is the part of the skull located behind the ear. The diseased cells are often the result of an ear infection that has spread into the skull.

Types:

1. Simple mastoidectomy
2. Radical mastoidectomy
3. Modified radical mastoidectomy

During the procedure, the surgeon will get access to mastoid bone through a cut made behind your ear and uses a a microscope and a small drill to open mastoid bone and drill out the infected air cells and now stitches the procedure site.

• Facial nerve paralysis or weakness
• Sensorineural hearing loss
• Dizziness or vertigo
• Tinnitus which causes abnormal noises in the ear
