Details of Hemispherectomy

This surgical procedure involves total, or partial removal of an affected cerebral hemisphere or disconnecting the affected cerebral hemisphere from the unaffected side.

Types:

Anatomic hemispherectomy: The frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes are removed, and the deeper structures are left intact.

Functional hemispherectomy: A smaller area of the affected hemisphere is removed and the remaining brain tissue is disconnected.

May include:

• Infection
• Bleeding
• Allergic reaction to the anesthesia
