Details of PDA Device Closure

Patent ductus arteriosus is an abnormal communication between aorta and pulmonary artery that helps oxygenated blood to pass into the lungs.

By the age of 6-12 months, it becomes clear, if baby needs any surgery.

• Unresponsiveness
• Elevated blood pressure in the lungs
• Dilation of the heart due to excess blood flow

This surgery is done through a thoracotomy. From the upper left side of the back, the chest is accessed to speparate the ribs and move the lung out of the way to have a look at PDA. The surgeon then typically either clips or ligates the PDA.
