Details of Gestational Trophoblastic Disease-GTD

This is a group of rare tumors that involve abnormal growth of cells inside a woman’s uterus. These start in the cells that would normally develop into the placenta during pregnancy.

Types:

• Hydatidiform mole (complete or partial)
• Invasive mole
• Choriocarcinoma
• Placental-site trophoblastic tumor
• Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor

• Anemia
• Abdominal swelling
• Ovarian cysts
• Vomiting
• Pre-eclampsia
• Hyperthyroidism
• Toxic pregnancy
• Vaginal bleeding

• Blood and urine tests
• Examination of the placenta
• Tests of spinal fluid
• Imaging tests
• Ultrasound
• Chest X-ray
• CT scan
• MRI scan
• PET scan
• Some other tests

Treatment varies from disease type to type. Usually a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

• Age: In woman older than 35 and younger than 20
• Prior molar pregnancy
• Prior miscarriage(s)
• Blood type: blood type A or AB are slightly more prone to getting it
• Birth control pills
• Family history
