Details of Double Outlet Right Ventricle - DORV

In this congenital heart condition, the aorta and the artery that directs blood from the heart to the lungs are partially or wholly connected to the lower right heart chamber (right ventricle). In a normal heart, the pulmonary artery is connected to the right ventricle and the aorta to the left one. In patients with this condition, there is a hole present between the two ventricles, called a ventricular septal defect (VSD).

Several types of surgery may be performed, depending on the specific case and associated defects. In some infants a temporary procedure may be done to insert a shunt between the aorta and the pulmonary artery, which is removed later in life during definitive cardiac surgery.
