Details of Device Closure- ASD VSD

It is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers of your heart (atria). Small defects never cause any problem. The hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs causing damage to heart and lungs.

May include:

• Swelling of legs, feet or abdomen
• Heart palpitations or skipped beats
• Stroke
• Heart murmur
• Tiredness

May include:

• Genetic disorder.
• Mother's poor nutrition.
• Use of alcohol.
• Diabetes Rubella

May be recommended:

• MRI CT scan
• Chest X-ray
• Electrocardiogram (ECG)
• Cardiac catheterization

Surgical treatment has two ways to be performed.

Cardiac catheterization: During this procedure, the surgeon places with the help of catheter a mesh patch to close the hole and now the heart tissue grows around the mesh, permanently sealing the hole. This is special for the secundum type of atrial septal defects.

Open-heart surgery: During this procedure, an incision is made in the chest where surgeon uses patches to close the hole. This is special to repair primum, sinus venosus and coronary sinus atrial defects.

• Eisenmenger syndrome
• Pulmonary hypertension
• Right-sided heart failure
• Heart rhythm abnormalities
• Increased risk of a stroke
• Shortened life span
