Details of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Abdominal aortic aneurysm is an enlargement of the lower part of the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body, which runs down the center of the chest and the abdomen. Due to the large size of the aorta, a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm can be life-threatening.

Symptoms may include:

1. Deep, constant pain in either side of abdomen.
2. Pulse near bellybutton.
3. Back pain.

Factors behind causing aortic aneurysms include:

1. Hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).
2. High blood pressure.
3. Blood vessel diseases.
4. Infection of the aorta.
5. Trauma.

1. Abdominal ultrasound.
2. Physical exam.
3. CT Scan & MRI

Treatment options:

Medical monitoring: This option may be recommended if the aneurysm in small and symptoms are very checked. Regular checkups and treatment for high blood pressure should be expected.

Surgery:

1. Open abdominal surgery: This involves removing damaged section of the aorta and replacing it with a synthetic graft, which is sewn in place.
2. Endovascular repair: Less invasive, this is used more often. During which doctors attach a synthetic graft to the catheter that’s inserted through an artery in the leg and threaded into aorta. This graft is placed at the site of the aneurysm, and then expanded and fastened in the place. It reinforced the weakened section of the aorta to prevent rupture of the aneurysm.

Risk making factors:

1. Tobacco use
2. Aging
3. Family history
4. Other aneurysms

May include:

1. Sudden, intense and persistent abdominal or back pain.
2. Low blood pressure.
