Details of Cleft Lip Surgery

It is a condition of openings or splits in the lips area. This occurs when the facial structures in an unborn baby remain open partially or completely. This might be genetic or due to other reasons as well.

• Difficult swallowing
• Nasal speaking
• Ear infection

Cleft Lip: During the procedure, the tissue and the skin from both sides of the cleft lip is used to make the lip wider and to close the gap.

Cleft Palate: During the surgery, the muscles and tissues of the two sides of the palate are connected together to close the cleft.

Risk increasing factors:

• Family history
• Diabetes 
• Obesity during pregnancy
