Details of Boutonniere Deformity

It is a condition which affects the joints of fingers causing to the middle joint to bend in, and the outer one to bend out.

May include:

• Stiffness
• Swelling
• Pain
• Difficulty in straightening

May include:

• Finger fracture
• Finger dislocation
• Deep cuts
• Rheumatoid arthritis

May be recommended:

• Physical examination
• Imaging tests like X-rays

Nonsurgical options:

Splints: In which a splint is applied to the finger at the middle joint to straighten it throughout the process of healing.

Exercises: A physician may recommend stretching exercises to improve the strength and flexibility in the fingers.

Medication: Sometimes, medication including corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and swelling.

Surgical option:

Surgery: It can be done only when the patient has the following conditions:

1. The deformity results from rheumatoid arthritis.
2. The tendon is severed.
3. A large bone fragment is displaced from its normal position.
4. The condition does not improve with splinting.
