Treatment of Biventricular Pacing

This pacemaker can be implanted in two ways:

Inside the heart (endocardial, transvenous approach): A lead is placed into a vein under collarbone, and then guided to the heart and it's tip would be attached to the heart muscle. The other end of the lead is attached to the pulse generator, which is placed under the skin of your chest.

Outside the heart (epicardial approach): Your chest will be cut and the lead tip is attached to the outside of the heart. And the other end of the lead is attached to the pulse generator which is placed under the skin in the abdomen.

Risks of Biventricular Pacing

May include:

  • Infection at the implant site
  • Allergic reaction to the medications used during the procedure
  • Swelling, bleeding or bruising where your ICD was implanted
  • Damage to the vein where your ICD leads are placed
  • Bleeding around your heart, which can be life-threatening
  • Blood leaking through the heart valve where the ICD lead is placed
  • Collapsed lung (pneumothorax)
Complications of Biventricular Pacing

  • Fever or chills
  • Increased pain, redness, swelling, or bleeding or other drainage from the insertion site
  • Chest pain or pressure, nausea or vomiting, profuse sweating, dizziness or fainting
  • Palpitations
