Frequently Asked Questions

What is Glenn procedure?

This is a type of open-heart surgery. This is a palliative surgical procedure performed for patients with Tricuspid atresia. It is also part of the surgical treatment path for hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Largely replaced by Bidirectional Glenn procedure.

Symptoms of Glenn procedure

This may include:

  • Swelling (edema) in the legs, ankles and feet
  • Swelling of the abdomen (ascites)
  • Sudden weight gain from fluid retention
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Blue tinge to the skin and lips (cyanosis)
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tiring easily, especially during feedings
  • Slow growth and poor weight gain
Causes of Glenn procedure

Why is it done? 1) To make blood from the upper part of the body go directly to the lungs. This lets the blood pick up oxygen without passing through the heart. 2) To take some of the extra work away from the right ventricle.

Diagnosis of Glenn procedure

This may be advised:

  • Echocardiogram
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Pulse oximetry. 4) Chest X-ray
  • Cardiac catheterization
Treatment of Glenn procedure

May include:

Shunting: During this procedure the blood flow from upper body is redirected to the lungs. The superior vena cava is connected to the right pulmonary artery after being disconnected from the heart. This supplies proper oxygen.

Atrial septostomy: This creates more scope for proper blood flow between the heart's upper chambers from the right atrium to the left atrium.

Pulmonary artery band placement: It is performed in case of excessive blood flow from the heart to the lungs. a surgeon might place a band around the pulmonary artery to reduce the flow.

Glenn operation: At the age of 3 to 6 months, doctor removes the first shunt, then connects one of the large veins that normally returns blood to the heart (the superior vena cava) to the pulmonary artery instead.

Fontan procedure: At the age of 2 to 3 years, the doctor creates a path for the blood that's returning to the heart to flow directly into the pulmonary arteries, which then transport the blood into the lungs.

Complications of Glenn procedure

May include:

  • Heart rhythm abnormalities
  • Kidney or liver disease
  • Frequent tiring
  • Formation of blood clots
