Treatment of Extracapsular Cataract Extraction

In this surgical procedure, an incision is made in the eye and the lens is removed in one piece, using phacoemusification. Through this incision the surgeon inserts surgical tools to remove the front capsule of the lens and the milky lens comprising the cataract. The very back capsule of the lens is left in place for the artificial lens to rest on. Stiches are required. Once the cataract is removed, the artificial lens is implanted into the empty lens capsule.
