It is a surgical procedure to restore normal blood and oxygen circulation to the heart bypassing the blocked coronary artery.

This is done in two ways:

One in which the left internal thoracic artery is diverted to the left anterior descending branch of the left coronary artery.

Another one in which a great saphenous vein is taken from a leg generally or from any other part and one end is attached to the aorta or one of its major branches, and the other end is attached to the obstructed artery immediately after the obstruction to restore blood flow.

Treatment Methods:

Open surgery: A big incision is made in the chest and then with help of medication the heart is stopped, hereafter a heart-lung machine takes over to circulate blood to the body. The surgeon takes a part of healthy blood vessel, generally from chest wall or leg and attaches the both ends above and below the blocked artery so that blood oxygen flow is restored around the area bypassing the diseased artery.

Off-pump bypass surgery: Also known as Beating heart surgery. This method allows surgery to be carried on during beating heart after some state-of-the-art equipment has been placed to stabilize the area of the heart the surgeon is working on.

Minimally invasive surgery: Some minor incisions are made in the chest to perform the procedure. The surgeon often resorts to use of robotics and video imaging that help the surgeon operate in a small area.
