Balloon septostomy is a minimally invasive heart procedure in which a cardiologist uses a balloon catheter to widen congenital heart defects such as foramen ovale, patent foramen ovale, or atrial septal defect. These defects create hurdle in pumping oxygen-rich blood to the body. So this procedure helps restore the necessary blood circulation.

During the procedure, the cardiologist makes some small incisions in the groin to reach the femoral artery with a tiny flexible tube and then a deflated balloon flexible tube is inserted into the first flexible tube and is guided to the heart.
